There has been a recent drive from the Forest of Peace Foundation with regards to Teak trees in an effort to make our planet greener. We all know about the effects that excessive carbon dioxide can have on mother earth. The question facing everyone right now is what are we planning to do about it?

One of the ways we could assist is to support organizations like the Forest of Peace who are doing what it takes to help humans live in harmony with nature. This is probably why they are gearing towards planting as many teak trees as possible with funds they collect from the man in the street and huge corporations.  Taking Care of Teak Trees in Favor of the Environment

Teak trees serve a twofold purpose; One, it cares for the environment by releasing much needed oxygen into the atmosphere, Two, Do it Yours elvers find it to be the most naturally weather resistant wood in the world right now. Due to its natural hardy texture, teak is extremely suitable and very usable as outdoor decks and patios. 

Did you know that it can take anywhere between 10 to 15 years for a teak tree to grow to maturity? Amazing isn't it?

 
If your property is big enough, you could even grow your own. How would you accomplish this though? Well, it is not as hard as you think. Just follow the easy steps set out below and you could have your very own homegrown teak tree in years to come:

• Soak the seeds in fairly warm water for at least 12 hours. Then remove it from the water and lay it on a flat surface, ensuring it is in direct sunlight. Leave it in the sun for 12 hours, then repeat the soaking and drying process for a period of 10 days. This needs to be done to hasten seed germination.
• Your next step, would be fill a 4 to 6 inch planting pot with one inch of gravel and 6 inches of sand, then finally one inch of equal parts moss and sand. Now you simply press the teak seeds into the top layer soil ensuring that it is barely covered. You could place 2 to 3 seed per planting pot
• Now you would go on to ensure the seed is being placed in direct sunlight at temperatures  that are just above 65 degrees Fahrenheit to get it to germinate properly. Make sure you water the seed at least twice a day. You need to do this for about 15 days before it would germinate. Then allow it to the young teak trees to grow in the pot until they reach a height of about 1 foot
• Prepare your soil with sufficient amounts of compost and ensure sufficient amounts of nutrients are added. You could consult your local nursery for the best compost mix that you can use for this purpose.
• Ensure that you only transplant your young teak trees after the the final frost. You should dig a hole that is twice the size of the roots of the young teak trees. Gently place the trees in the hole you dig, ensuring that you spread out its roots. Fill the hole and tamp the soil to ensure there is not a chance of air pockets. Space the trees about 7 feet apart from each other.
• From hereon, you should water it when the top 1 to 1 1 2 inches of soil is dried out, and fertilize the soil where needed. It is generally a good idea to spread a layer of about 2 to 3 inches of mulch around each tree as it will prevent weeds while retaining moisture. As long as you ensure the mulch is at least 6 inches away from the base of the teak tree to prevent it from burning. During the growing season, you could fertilize the tree at least once a month.

The wonderful role of Bees within our Environment

Bees are wonderful creatures and they certainly do their part in nature.  I have worked on a farm in New Rockford ND, USA for about 6 months. Their I had the wonderful privilege of working along side other beekeepers.  I am still going to elaborate more about my experiences there within a short e-book that I plan to have done in about 3 months from now.  Will keep you posted.  For now I would like to stress that these little creatures serve a wonderful purpose. That is to pollinate flowers such as canola, lavender, and almond flowers.

They are very much appreciated by farmers of almond trees in North California, USA.  In turn these farmers pay the bee farmers handsomely for their services.  Or should I say the services of the bees.

Urgent need to Reserve Water

It is very important to conserve water as much as possible.  This is especially true of South Africa right now.  There are many ways to do this.  When washing dishes, do we just endlessly run water for when we want to wash a few pots.

One useful way that I found, is to use some kettle water in one of the pots with the right amount of dish washing liquid.  Then you can use the same water for every other pot that you are going to wash.  Another way when washing dishes is to only run enough water to wash your dishes and not to overfill your sink.

When you bath or shower, you can also take care not to run too much water.  You can even make arrangements to bath in the same water.  My wife and I as well as our daughter bath in the same water. Maybe this can be done by you as well. Please take the necessary care to conserve water whenever the opportunity arise to do so.

The real threats that plastic pose to our environment

My wife attended a meeting sometime ago, where Peter Starstedt was present.  The whole point of the meeting was to make people aware of the dangers that plastic rings, that come of various bottles, pose to the animal kingdom.  Not just that, but also the plastic wraps that gets used on bigger boxes.  When these does not get cut off correctly, it poses serious threats to the environment. There are people who go out in the early hours of the morning to have this very same plastic remove from seals. The plastic wraps around the necks of these seals and end of suffocating them. 

How can we help prevent these disasters?  Well, by taking reasonable care in ensuring that we cut plastic wraps properly. Also by cutting through the plastic ring of any bottles.  The extra care we take will go a long way to ensure that no harm is done. So before you throw any plastic rings or wraps away, please ensure that it will not cause any harm to our precious animals.

Our Contribution to a greener world at Home

My wife and I are keen in making this world a better place to live in.  It all starts at home though.  Like Mohandis Gandhi once said.  The world would be a better place and that there would be peace if everyone lived according to the golden rule"You must treat others the way you would like to be treated".  Wise words isn't it?

Now I have a saying back home that"Two heads are better than one".  Yes as partners, we need to put on our thinking caps and work out a way that will be beneficial to all.

You can contribute to a cleaner environment by making sure that you separate your refuse into separate bags as mentioned in a another article.  Another way is to make use of a dirt catcher in your kitchen sink.  It will prevent unpleasant smells back home and contribute to a cleaner water system.

There is a lot that can be done to make our planet a healthier and happier place to be in.  Future articles will address some pertinent issues that we deal with on a daily basis.
