The wonderful role of Bees within our Environment

Bees are wonderful creatures and they certainly do their part in nature.  I have worked on a farm in New Rockford ND, USA for about 6 months. Their I had the wonderful privilege of working along side other beekeepers.  I am still going to elaborate more about my experiences there within a short e-book that I plan to have done in about 3 months from now.  Will keep you posted.  For now I would like to stress that these little creatures serve a wonderful purpose. That is to pollinate flowers such as canola, lavender, and almond flowers.

They are very much appreciated by farmers of almond trees in North California, USA.  In turn these farmers pay the bee farmers handsomely for their services.  Or should I say the services of the bees.

Do yourself a favor and look up on bees on the internet.

It boils down to having a hobby of your own.  Maybe bees are not one of those hobbies you would like to take up.  I found hamsters to be very interesting.  To find out more GO HERE

Urgent need to Reserve Water

It is very important to conserve water as much as possible.  This is especially true of South Africa right now.  There are many ways to do this.  When washing dishes, do we just endlessly run water for when we want to wash a few pots.

One useful way that I found, is to use some kettle water in one of the pots with the right amount of dish washing liquid.  Then you can use the same water for every other pot that you are going to wash.  Another way when washing dishes is to only run enough water to wash your dishes and not to overfill your sink.

When you bath or shower, you can also take care not to run too much water.  You can even make arrangements to bath in the same water.  My wife and I as well as our daughter bath in the same water. Maybe this can be done by you as well. Please take the necessary care to conserve water whenever the opportunity arise to do so.

There are even special toilet kits designed to be environmentally friendly and that uses 50% less water.  For more information GO HERE

The real threats that plastic pose to our environment

My wife attended a meeting sometime ago, where Peter Starstedt was present.  The whole point of the meeting was to make people aware of the dangers that plastic rings, that come of various bottles, pose to the animal kingdom.  Not just that, but also the plastic wraps that gets used on bigger boxes.  When these does not get cut off correctly, it poses serious threats to the environment. There are people who go out in the early hours of the morning to have this very same plastic remove from seals. The plastic wraps around the necks of these seals and end of suffocating them.

How can we help prevent these disasters?  Well, by taking reasonable care in ensuring that we cut plastic wraps properly. Also by cutting through the plastic ring of any bottles.  The extra care we take will go a long way to ensure that no harm is done. So before you throw any plastic rings or wraps away, please ensure that it will not cause any harm to our precious animals.

Our Contribution to a greener world at Home

My wife and I are keen in making this world a better place to live in.  It all starts at home though.  Like Mohandis Gandhi once said.  The world would be a better place and that there would be peace if everyone lived according to the golden rule"You must treat others the way you would like to be treated".  Wise words isn't it?

Now I have a saying back home that"Two heads are better than one".  Yes as partners, we need to put on our thinking caps and work out a way that will be beneficial to all.

You can contribute to a cleaner environment by making sure that you separate your refuse into separate bags as mentioned in a another article.  Another way is to make use of a dirt catcher in your kitchen sink.  It will prevent unpleasant smells back home and contribute to a cleaner water system.

There is a lot that can be done to make our planet a healthier and happier place to be in.  Future articles will address some pertinent issues that we deal with on a daily basis.

Solar Energy used at Home

How you may ask can we take care of the environment at home.  Well one way is to make sure you separate your waste.

Put all plastics together and all glass together.  This does not always happen in all countries.  So it is very important for the environment that you take some time out of your busy lives to separate your junk.

Another way is to make use of lighting that is friendly to the environment.

We can make use of special bulbs at home that will last longer and be more effective in saving energy, which again will save the environment.  To learn more - GO HERE

Another Way to Go Green

As mentioned in my previous blog, India is all for going green in more ways than one.

Another very effective way to use your resources is to make your Own Biogas for Power!!

Some of you might already know that this technology has been around for a very long time now.

And it's still being used by countries such as China, India and Vietnam, but many such systems are not practical to build and use anywhere.

And what's the reason you may ask!

  • They are massive in scale and take up a lot of space if you decide to build one for your home.
  • Secondly, the Biogas generator depends on Animal waste to produce biogas which can be very inconvenient to use and the smell from animal waste will be very unpleasant for you and your neighbors.
  • Lastly, it can be expensive to build and difficult to maintain it in the long term because of its enormous size.

What if we told you that there is a solution to this problem and a very good one.

How About A Portable Biogas Generator That Could Completely Eliminate Your Gas Bill And Use Food Waste Instead ?

Look at second step in the above diagram; you'll see a Biogas generator.

This is the exact generator that you'll be learning to build in your own backyard.

Don't you find that your gas bills are setting you on fire… Then maybe it is time to look at your options.

I am all for going green and making your own biogas by using food waste.

It is a brilliant way to help save the environment, isn't it.

Did You Know that Biogas is also know as the green fuel because it is said to be carbon neutral and a source of renewable energy.

We are sure that you have a burning desire to learn more - GO HERE

Going Green in India

India's Programme Planning for Renewables

Currently India is playing ODI's in South Africa. Indian fans are hoping for the best.

I would like to touch on another matter though. The Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources was created in the Ministry of Energy(DNES). In 1992, DNES was upgraded and it started functioning as as separate Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources(MNES).

The Ministry takes care of the following specific items:

  • Commission for Additional Sources of Energy(CASE)
  • Solar Energy including solar photovoltaic devices and their development, production and applications
  • Research and development of biogas and programmes relating to biogas units
  • Programme relating to improved wood stoves and research and development thereof
  • All matters relating to small/mini/micro hydel projects of and below 25 MW capacity
  • Research and development of other non-conventional/renewable sources of energy and programmes relating thereto
  • Integrated Rural Energy Programme(IREP)
  • Soft funding for renewable energy systems through Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency

India is really taking it to heart as far as going green is concerned.

Why do we say that?

Well look at some of their major achievements:

Over 4200 MW grid power from wind, small hydro, biomass and solar energy.

3600 remote villages/hamlets, including those in Sunderbans, Bastar, Ladakh and the North East electrified through solar energy.

Deployment of 7.5 lakh solar photovoltaic systems for lighting, communication and related uses.

7 lakh sq.meter collector area solar water heating systems installed.

Largest solar-steam cooking system for 15,000 persons/day set up at Tirupati Tirumal Devasthanam

Integrated Rural Energy Programs Implemented in 860 blocks

That is just to name a few of what was done by India. Now please let it be known that they are not the only ones going to all this trouble to use alternative means to electricity.

What can you do to play a part in making the world Green. Why not look at the option of installing solar panels in and around your home.

It is affordable if you do it yourself and it will help save the environment. To find out more - GO HERE
